First Stitches: How Joojoos Came to Life

Picture
Hello, dear heart,
It’s always a little nerve-wracking sharing the beginnings of something special, but I thought today might be the right time to tell you how Joojoos came to be.
The truth is… the first Joojoos weren’t made from perfect fabrics or grand designs. In fact, they were stitched from scraps—forgotten pieces of cloth I found tucked away in old baskets, worn with time but still soft to the touch. I didn’t set out to make something beautiful. I just wanted to make something that could help.

You see, Joojoos were never made to be perfect on the outside. In fact, they’ve always had a bigger purpose—to teach us to look beyond what we see and connect with the heart within. It’s easy to judge by appearances, but Joojoos remind us that the truest magic lies beneath the surface, where compassion and kindness live.
When I first started, I would use whatever fabrics I had. Old linens, patterned cloth that had seen better days, even scraps that most would pass over. I stained them with herbal blends from The Veiled Valley—tea leaves, wildflowers, and roots—to give them that soft, aged warmth. Each fabric took on the stain differently, which is why no two Joojoos ever looked exactly the same. But that’s what made them special.
The first Joojoo I stitched was small, with a crooked smile and a heart made from deep red fabric I found tucked away in my grandmother’s sewing kit. Its button eyes didn’t match, but when I held it in my hands, I could feel the kindness within it—like it was already waiting for someone to love.
Eight Joojoos found homes that first year. Each one was different—some aged linen, others soft fleece, and even patterned fabrics with faded colours. They went to people who needed a little extra comfort, a bit more courage, or simply a reminder that they weren’t alone.
Even now, I still use reclaimed fabrics whenever I can. There’s something about giving forgotten threads a second life—a chance to be part of something meaningful. Every Joojoo carries those stories in its stitches, the gentle reminder that we’re all a little imperfect, but still worthy of love and purpose.
So if you ever look at your Joojoo and notice a faint pattern, a slight difference in colour, or an aged softness in the fabric, know that it’s not a flaw—it’s part of its story. A story of compassion, second chances, and the quiet magic that lives in even the simplest of things.
Thank you for being part of this journey and for giving a Joojoo a home.
With warmth and threads of kindness,
Sayge R. Hearthstone 🧵💖
