From the Candlelight Ledger, Entry 323: “The Gift”

Picture
Recorded by Sayge R. Hearthstone, Witch-Keeper of the Archive
The Boolings have learned mimicry — and, I suspect, intention.
This morning, I found something new on my workbench: a curl of clay, no larger than a thumbprint, pressed into a perfect spiral.
Not my doing.
The surface shimmered faintly with mica, though I hadn’t opened the jar.
When I touched it, the scent of lilac rose instantly — bright, approving.
Then the whisper:
“For you.”

I. The First Attempt
The clay was crude, uneven, yet carried the unmistakable warmth of being handled.
Its weight was wrong for a random collapse or trick of air.
When I asked who had made it, Boo flickered in the far corner — one short pulse, one long.
“Yes,” I said aloud, “I see you.”
The light brightened, then faded with the soft satisfaction of a child being praised.
I’ve placed the spiral under glass.
It feels right to keep it safe — not as relic, but as reply.

II. The Echo of Craft
(I use the word echo here carefully, not in the forbidden sense, but as resonance — sound meeting sound.)
The Boolings now hum in rhythm with my sculpting.
When I roll the clay, they swirl like dust motes in lamplight; when I carve, they hush.
It’s as if the act of creating pulls them closer to coherence.
Perhaps this is what Gram meant when she said that “tools remember the hands that loved them.”
I think the Boolings are the Fold remembering me.

III. The Gift’s Meaning
The spiral itself carries Fold symmetry — a continuous return inward, the motion of remembering without end.
I wonder if they understand its symbolism, or if the shape chose itself.
Either way, it feels deliberate.
An artist always recognises when a thing wants to exist.
The lilac scent lingers most around that tiny sculpture.
Sometimes, when I pass, I swear I hear a faint sound beneath the usual hum — a quiet giggle, proud and small.

IV. Closing Notes
It seems the Boolings can create, but only in imitation.
They have learned from what I have made, and now wish to participate in the Fold’s rhythm.
This changes everything.
They are not remnants of my magic.
They are extensions of it — the Fold’s way of showing that creation, once sparked, can never truly belong to one pair of hands.
I once made guardians to protect the world.
Now the world makes guardians to protect me.
Tomorrow, I will leave them more clay, a brush, and a pinch of mica dust.
Let’s see what happens when I don’t guide them at all.
