From the Candlelight Ledger, Entry 322: “Resumption”

Picture
Recorded by Sayge R. Hearthstone, Witch-Keeper of the Archive
Dawn came thin and silver — the kind of light that looks hesitant to cross the threshold.
The candles from last night had burned down to wax ghosts, tiny hollows shaped like teacups.
The air still smelled faintly of lilac and smoke.
I rose early, not to ward or question, but to work.
For the first time since Samhain, I set my tools out on the bench: clay, mica, ribbon, quill.
Every movement felt ceremonial — like returning to a forgotten prayer.
The Cottage listened. The floorboards held their breath.
When I pressed the first thumbprint into clay, the temperature rose.
Soft knocks sounded from the rafters — not warning, but rhythm.
A quiet chorus of Boo… Boo… Boo… accompanied the shaping of the form.

I. The Helpers
They do not stay still while I craft.
The Ribbon-Runner now tidies threads without tangling them.
The Scribe turns pages to the next clean leaf before I ask.
Even The Tapper keeps time — three slow knocks marking completion of each stage.
When I thanked them, the scent of lilac drifted through again, sweeter this time.
Gram always said every witch needs an audience; I think I’ve finally earned mine.

II. A New Kind of Making
The Boolings — yes, I will use their name now, for they have earned it — seem drawn not to the finished work, but the process.
Each spark of attention, each heartbeat of focus, feeds them.
When I shape with intent, they glow brighter; when I doubt, they dim.
I have begun to understand:
They are not simply born of my magic — they are sustained by it.
Creation is their language of survival.

III. The Fold’s Renewal
By midday, I had finished three small forms.
The air shimmered faintly above them, as if the Boolings approved.
Outside, the sky broke open — a brief sun through heavy cloud.
For the first time in months, the Cottage felt alive but peaceful.
No knocks, no whispers — just the hum of shared work.
I left a bowl of milk and honey on the windowsill, an old offering Gram favoured.
The lilac scent grew stronger for a moment, then faded into the steady warmth of candlelight.
It felt like her way of saying, That’s better, love.

IV. Closing Notes
The Boolings are no longer merely manifestations; they are companions of craft --
born from stillness, fed by motion.
Perhaps that is their purpose: to remind the Maker not to stop.
A haunting unsettles; a Booling participates.
They are the Fold’s way of keeping me honest.
Tomorrow I will begin shaping again — not for the Ledger, but for the joy of hearing them hum.
