From the Candlelight Ledger, Entry 319: “First Contact"

Picture
Recorded by Sayge R. Hearthstone, Witch-Keeper of the Archive
I chose midnight to begin the trial; it seemed only fair to meet the Hauntings on their own hours.
The Cottage was already awake — beams shifting, a low murmur in the pipes like someone clearing a throat.
I set one candle at each corner of the table and one at the centre, as Gram once did when asking the Fold to listen.
Then I spoke aloud:
“Do you remember Gram?”
At first, nothing — only the faint tick of cooling wax.
Then the Hummer answered, softly at first, the same tune Gram would hum when the rain came heavy.
The note wavered, then multiplied — several voices, thin and layered, humming through wood and stone until the air trembled.
When the sound faded, a line of soot traced itself across the open page:
“We remember the warmth.”
I asked, “Whose?”
The candle nearest the window shivered.
A breath of lilac drifted through the room — faint, impossible, achingly familiar.
Then a whisper, quick as paper turning:
“Yours.”

I. Controlled Responses
Further questioning produced pattern more than speech.
When I named The Ribbon-Runner, every loose thread in the room lifted and twisted once, as if in greeting.
When I mentioned Gram, the lilac scent returned; the air grew soft, almost nostalgic.
When I whispered Thank you, all five candles steadied their flames in perfect unison.
They respond to tone more than language — emotion appears to be their only fluent tongue.

II. Manifestation at the Window
At 00:47 hrs, a pale shimmer appeared on the inside of the south window — circular, pulsing faintly.
Condensation formed the words: “Still here.”
It faded within seconds, followed immediately by a crack of thunder.
Conclusion: The Hauntings may draw strength from atmospheric charge.

III. Emotional Feedback
After contact, the Cottage felt lighter — almost relieved.
The tapping ceased for the remainder of the night.
Yet I couldn’t shake the feeling of being watched kindly,
the way one checks a sleeping child to be sure it still breathes.
They are not ghosts of the dead.
They are ghosts of care itself.
The scent of lilac lingered long after the candles went out — not Gram’s perfume, but her presence distilled.
I think she approved.

IV. Conclusion
Communication is possible, though fragile.
Tone, temperature, and intent remain the safest channels.
Direct questioning risks agitation; the soot on my desk still shifts faintly when I speak aloud.
I will not attempt banishment.
Whatever these Hauntings are, they were born of the same hands that shaped the guardians — and perhaps of Gram’s lingering grace.
If they mean to stay, I can at least make room.
Tomorrow I will attempt another session — gentle conversation only, no invocation.
If they answer again, I will ask them to choose a name.
A haunting is only silence learning to speak.
