From the Candlelight Ledger, Entry 318: “The Haunting Register – Preface"

Picture
Compiled by Sayge R. Hearthstone, Witch-Keeper of the Archive
The knocks have not ceased.
Nine last night — each perfectly spaced, as though something were learning rhythm.
The candle on Gram’s workbench burned clean while every other guttered.
It seems the Hauntings favour her corner.
I have accepted this is no passing disturbance.
The Workshop has become a nursery, and these small presences are its restless infants.
If the Fold insists on birthing through me, then I must at least keep proper records.
Hence — The Haunting Register.
I will list each presence as it makes itself known: its signs, its temperament, and the moment it begins to answer back.

1. The Hummer
First manifestation: a tune carried down the stairwell — Gram’s tune, the one she hummed while trimming wicks.
At first a comfort, now too precise to be coincidence.
It hums when I work, grows louder when I falter, stops if I speak to it.
Mood: maternal / protective.
Trigger: candlelight and concentration.
Suspected nature: Residual evolved by recognition.

2. The Ribbon-Runner
Observed behaviour: gathers loose ribbons and threads, knots them around jars and quills.
Once left a perfect bow on my kettle handle.
When scolded, the next morning every drawer was tied shut.
Mood: playful, easily offended.
Trigger: open storage.
Advised treatment: praise its “craftsmanship,” then untie quietly when it’s gone.

3. The Scribe
Manifestation: faint scratching heard inside the Candlelight Ledger while closed.
Upon opening, found a single word written in my hand: Here.
I have since locked the quills away; it now writes with soot instead.
Mood: curious, territorial.
Trigger: unattended inkpots.
Note: may be attempting conversation.

4. The Tapper
Behaviour: three slow raps whenever I speak a Fold-name aloud, echoing the original pattern from the hearth.
Seems to acknowledge each name like attendance in a classroom.
Mood: observant.
Trigger: spoken invocation.
Considered the Hauntings’ herald or keeper of count.

These four remain constant companions.
Others drift through like passing dreams — little thuds, sighs, flickers I cannot yet classify.
Each time I mention Gram, the air softens and a breath of lilac threads through the room.
No bloom grows nearby, yet the scent lingers like approval.
I have come to treat it as her signature — a reassurance that she watches but does not interfere.
I have sealed the south window with rowan twine; it trembles when storms pass but holds firm.
The Hauntings gather there most nights, drawn to the lightning’s charge.
For now, I will keep the lamp lit and the pages open.
If these manifestations are indeed born of emotion condensed in matter, then documentation may calm them — naming as an act of anchoring.
If a haunting begins with recognition,
perhaps peace begins with record.
Tomorrow, I will attempt formal introduction.
If they answer, I will ask the question that has burned since the first knock:
“Do you remember Gram?”
