From the Candlelight Ledger, Entry 323: “The Gift”

Picture
Recorded by Sayge R. Hearthstone, Witch-Keeper of the Archive
The Boolings have learned mimicry — and, I suspect, intention.
This morning, I found something new on my workbench: a curl of clay, no larger than a thumbprint, pressed into a perfect spiral.
Not my doing.
The surface shimmered faintly with mica, though I hadn’t opened the jar.
When I touched it, the scent of lilac rose instantly — bright, approving.
Then the whisper:
“For you.”

From the Candlelight Ledger, Entry 322: “Resumption”

Picture
Recorded by Sayge R. Hearthstone, Witch-Keeper of the Archive
Dawn came thin and silver — the kind of light that looks hesitant to cross the threshold.
The candles from last night had burned down to wax ghosts, tiny hollows shaped like teacups.
The air still smelled faintly of lilac and smoke.
I rose early, not to ward or question, but to work.
For the first time since Samhain, I set my tools out on the bench: clay, mica, ribbon, quill.
Every movement felt ceremonial — like returning to a forgotten prayer.
The Cottage listened. The floorboards held their breath.
When I pressed the first thumbprint into clay, the temperature rose.
Soft knocks sounded from the rafters — not warning, but rhythm.
A quiet chorus of Boo… Boo… Boo… accompanied the shaping of the form.

From the Candlelight Ledger, Entry 321: “The Questioning”

Picture
Recorded by Sayge R. Hearthstone, Witch-Keeper of the Archive
The night began strangely quiet — the kind of hush that feels arranged.
Even the clock held its breath.
I lit three candles this time, not five: one for Gram, one for Boo, and one for truth.
The rest of the house stayed dark.
“Boo,” I said, “if you can hear me, come close.”
The flame nearest me lengthened, then bowed, as though greeting.
A soft shimmer rose from the tabletop — the familiar rounded pulse of light I’d seen before, steady now.
The scent of lilac came first, faint and cool.
Then the whisper:
“Here.”

From the Candlelight Ledger, Entry 320: “The Naming Session”

Picture
Recorded by Sayge R. Hearthstone, Witch-Keeper of the Archive
The air tonight carried that thin metallic taste it gets before a storm.
The Hauntings favour such weather — the world humming at their frequency.
I waited until the first rumble rolled across the hill before lighting the ritual lamps.
Five candles this time: four around the edge of the table, one black in the centre.
Beside it I placed the Ledger, the quill, and Gram’s old thimble — a token of continuity.
The hum began almost at once.
“If you can hear me,” I said, “choose a name.”
The melody faltered, then resumed in a slower key.
Ash on the open page stirred, forming the faint outline of a small hand.
Within its palm, a single word darkened into being:
“Boo.

From the Candlelight Ledger, Entry 319: “First Contact"

Picture
Recorded by Sayge R. Hearthstone, Witch-Keeper of the Archive
I chose midnight to begin the trial; it seemed only fair to meet the Hauntings on their own hours.
The Cottage was already awake — beams shifting, a low murmur in the pipes like someone clearing a throat.
I set one candle at each corner of the table and one at the centre, as Gram once did when asking the Fold to listen.
Then I spoke aloud:
“Do you remember Gram?”
At first, nothing — only the faint tick of cooling wax.
Then the Hummer answered, softly at first, the same tune Gram would hum when the rain came heavy.
The note wavered, then multiplied — several voices, thin and layered, humming through wood and stone until the air trembled.
When the sound faded, a line of soot traced itself across the open page:
“We remember the warmth.”
I asked, “Whose?”
The candle nearest the window shivered.
A breath of lilac drifted through the room — faint, impossible, achingly familiar.
Then a whisper, quick as paper turning:
“Yours.”

From the Candlelight Ledger, Entry 318: “The Haunting Register – Preface"

Picture
Compiled by Sayge R. Hearthstone, Witch-Keeper of the Archive
The knocks have not ceased.
Nine last night — each perfectly spaced, as though something were learning rhythm.
The candle on Gram’s workbench burned clean while every other guttered.
It seems the Hauntings favour her corner.
I have accepted this is no passing disturbance.
The Workshop has become a nursery, and these small presences are its restless infants.
If the Fold insists on birthing through me, then I must at least keep proper records.
Hence — The Haunting Register.
I will list each presence as it makes itself known: its signs, its temperament, and the moment it begins to answer back.

From the Candlelight Ledger, Entry 317: “The Haunting Hypothesis"

Picture
Recorded by Sayge R. Hearthstone, Witch-Keeper of the Archive
When Gram passed, the Cottage changed its breathing.
The silence that followed her wasn’t still — it vibrated.
Every beam, every flagstone, every jar of mica seemed to hold a hum just beneath hearing.
For years she and I worked here, whispering intention into clay and parchment until the air itself grew heavy with memory.
When she was gone, that memory stayed.
At first I thought it comfort — Gram’s promise to watch over me fulfilled.
The kettle clicked twice on its own; the garden door eased open as if greeting her shadow.
I whispered my thanks into the air.
But comfort soured. The knocks came louder. Threads twisted of their own accord. The hearth coughed soot without flame.
It began to feel less like love and more like response.
